Working from home can have a lot of advantages, but it can also have some disadvantages. So before you decide on shifting to this career, you have to weigh in on the pros and cons of freelancing.
No longer entitled to free Healthcare coverage.
Most companies offer free Health care coverage to employees and their dependents. On the other hand, freelancers may not have this automatic benefits, but there are certain Healthcare organizations where you can get your own healthcare coverage for you and your family. Check this blog from Mommy Tasha about HMO for freelancers.
You need to handle your own payment of Taxes, SSS, Philhealth, and other Government obligations.
Payment of your Taxes, SSS, PhilHealth, Pagibig and all other government obligations is being done by the HR group of most companies. But in freelancing, you have to handle all of these on your own. When it comes to taxes, there’s a site called Taxumo which you can use to easily pay your taxes.
No Pension or Retirement benefit.
There’s no retirement benefit for Freelancers, but you can opt to find an investment plan where you can save up for your retirement. In fact, saving up on these investments can give you a lot more returns than what employees get from their pension or retirement benefits.
You need a lot of discipline.
When we’re at the office, we automatically get that working mood or sometimes we’re forced to do so because we have a boss that checks on what we’re doing. In freelancing, however, we have the freedom to choose the time we want to work which means we need to discipline ourselves to get to work. So in order to do this, we need to have proper time management. It would be best to stick to a time schedule just like what we do in the office.
Less social life.
For an introvert like me, this is a no problem. But for people who are used to having people around, working alone may not be a comfortable setup for them. The good side of freelancing, however, is that you now have time freedom which means, more time to go out and hang out with your friends. Plus, there are a lot of events for freelancers offering live workshops where you can meet fellow freelancers. So you can still get to socialize with people whenever you want to.
These are some of the disadvantages of working from home. As you see, there’s always a workaround solution for every problem. And when you come to think of it, these disadvantages cannot exceed the advantages working from home can give.
